Information about North East England

North East England is home to three large conurbations: Teesside, Wearside, and Tyneside. There are only three cities in the region; Newcastle upon Tyne is the largest, followed by Sunderland and the city of Durham, the county town of County Durham. Other large settlements in the region include Darlington; Gateshead; Hartlepool; Middlesbrough; South Shields; Stockton-on-Tees and Washington.

Visit North East England to discover some of our country’s real gems – both hidden and well known. The counties of South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire all have their own delights to offer, including Leeds, York, Scarborough and Beverley. As you travel further north, you can discover majestic Durham and its famous Durham Cathedral, cosmopolitan yet historic Tyne and Wear with Newcastle and Gateshead, and picture-perfect Northumberland with its castle-lined coastline. The region is steeped in history, with the Roman influence on view in York and further north at Hadrian’s Wall. Read all about the best things to do in North East England, no matter what type of visit you’re looking for.
The rolling hills and dry stone walls of the Yorkshire Dales contrast sharply with the ruggedness of the central peaks. The calm eastern shores provide home to many important species of birds and plants. The influence of the Industrial Revolutions is still evident on the landscape, where large areas once used for heavy industry have been redeveloped for modern leisure pursuits. Museums abound to celebrate the area’s industrial heritage.

This large region offers over 150 miles of coastline, dotted with long golden sandy beaches like Embleton in Northumberland. There are historic ports such as Whitby and quirky fishing villages like Robin Hood’s Bay.

Cyclists are well catered for, whether it is along gentle coastal cycle tracks or testing their mountain biking skills in Kielder Water & Forest Park, Northumberland. In Dalby Forest, North Yorkshire, they have invested heavily in a spectacular network of forest mountain biking trails for all levels, including a World Championship route!
